One aspect of furniture shopping that is sometimes overlooked is furniture size in proportion to the home and room it is going in, and even the people using it. Sometimes we might find ourselves attracted to a large, plush overstuffed armchair. Or a big, wrap around modular seating unit. Or a massive, sturdy coffee table. Or, even all three! But take a good look at your room before you make a decision on which furniture to buy. The reality is, some of the rooms we see in decorating magazines and such are in very large homes. Homes with rooms that are substantially bigger than the average family is living in!
And what harm can come from over-sized furniture if you happen to like it? Why not purchase the biggest pieces you can fit into a room? Because, really, proportion is important. when it comes to showing off your nice new furnishings. If the sofa or recliner is substantially over sized for the room it will end up looking cramped and not show off the nice eye pleasing design of the pieces you have chosen. The room will feel tight and overwhelmed and not the relaxing space you have envisioned.
The other end of the spectrum is equally important. Are you drawn to delicate side tables, or finely wrought dining table and chair sets, or maybe a smaller proportioned side chair? Before making a final choice , consider – does your choices fit your room, and even your own proportions?
A well appointed room has furniture and accessories that not only match the style and colors but also the size. A room should have furniture that fits well, with space to walk around easily and clear areas that are not crowded. It is never a good idea to “make” more furniture fit than necessary for the room either. On the other hand, if you have moved into a much larger home recently, you might find your furniture that worked in that previous apartment now just looks too tiny and that you need more bulk and heavier, bigger pieces. And, while you are at it, take a look at the accessories you choose. Wall art, plants and decorations should all be in keeping with the size of the furniture and the room it occupies.
Keep sizes and proportion in mind the next time you are out furniture shopping. Surprisingly, it’s common to disregard this ever so important element of good home decorating.
